Hurricane Katrina

Hits Biblical Proportions

Zach Zache Reports

On August 22nd, Hurricane Katrina was only a tropical depression in the Bahamas.  On August 23rd, it gained   power and reached tropical storm status.

The overall storm reached a category 5 status while in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  When it hit the US coast, it was a category 4 with winds up to 140 mph. However, it was massive.  The most   heavily affected areas of the coast were New Orleans, LA, Mobile, AL, and Gulfport, MS.

It was the fourth worst hurricane ever recorded. More than 80% of New Orleans was underwater.  There was no power or drinking water in New Orleans.   People who did not or could not evacuate had to be rescued from their roof tops, in boats, in the water, or on floating debris.

Many people died, but there is no official number yet. The rescue operations are still in action and evacuees are being taken to almost 20 different states.  There are “match-up” programs for children who have lost their parents in the incident.

This event has really brought the US together. People are donating jobs, homes, food, toiletries, etc. If you would like to help, please go to www.tucson-redcross.org, www.worldcare.org, or call 318-6740 to make a donation.

PS: Justin Riker and ALL students collected $375 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
