Serei Sees the Spark in Children's Eyes Monica Seng
Monica: What is your full name? Serei: Serei R. Kay. I usually never reveal my middle name Monica: When is your birthday, or do you even want people to know? Serei: March 5, 1972. I don’t mind people knowing my age. It’s just a number. Monica: Do you have any children and if so, how many? Serei: I have two wonderful children who are the pride and joy of my life-Monica and Jessica (she goes by Jessie). Monica: How old are they? Serei: Monica is nine; she’ll be ten in September, and Jessie just turned seven. Monica: Do you have any siblings? Serei: Yes, two sisters and three brothers-all older than me. Monica: Are you close to your brothers and sisters? Serei: No, unfortunately we are not as close to each other as I would like to be. I feel that I’m only close to one of my brothers who happens to be a dentist here in town. He has his practice in Continental Ranch. It is called Kay Dental. Monica: Most of us know that you do a lot here at ALL, but what is it about your job that you really enjoy? Serei: I try to do all that I can here to help make sure that things get done and are running smoothly. I would have to say that I enjoy all aspects of my job, whatever it may happen to be. Most of all, I enjoy seeing the spark in children’s eyes when they are learning things and are getting excited about what they are being taught. I really get excited when I’m working with children, especially the Preschoolers, and see all that they are studying and the level at which they are performing. Monica: Do you think that your job is fun? Serei: Absolutely! There are times when I’m tired or feeling down, but as soon as I come onto the campus and get my hugs from the kids, all my tiredness and sadness just melts away with each hug. It is truly rewarding to be able to enjoy my work to the point where it doesn’t even feel like work. I think that I’ve been blessed to be a part of something so socially and educationally important-to be part of such a fabulous staff and work with so many great kids and parents. Monica: What do you do in your spare time? Serei: I never seem to have any spare time, but in between work and all the running around that a mother does, I try to give all my time and attention to
my kids. I feel so guilty about my kids most of the time. I know that they have a great time here on campus, but I still feel guilty about keeping them here at school for so much of the time. They are so good about it too. I guess that comes with the territory of being a mother-you always feel guilty about something. Monica: What are some of your hobbies? Serei: I love taking my kids out. I also enjoy reading a lot, even though there never seems to be any time for that. I enjoy listening to music, helping people, and doing crossword puzzles. In fact, I love doing crossword puzzles so much that I have crossword puzzles books all over the house-one in every single room, including the restrooms. Monica: Is there any advice that you would like to give to the students? Serei: Definitely. Growing up, I was never encouraged to reach for my dreams. Education wasn’t that important for a girl. I would like to encourage students to take advantage of the endless opportunities here at ALL. This kind of education does not exist anywhere else in the nation. Students should be proud of what they are able to do here and what this will enable them to do in the future. They should be excited to be a part of something so extraordinary that it will cause a social change as well as a huge change in the education system. Opportunity doesn’t always land in your lap, so when it does, be smart enough to realize it and use it to its fullest extent. Good education is so important to how you are going to be able to live when in adulthood-the better the education, the easier your life is going to be. So use the teachers, use the resources that you have here and definitely study hard. Monica: Thank you for letting me interview you. Serei: You’re very welcome. I’m always glad and proud to see that students like you take what you do very seriously. |
