The War in Iraq Max: Why do you think that? Dad: I feel that if we had not intervened with Saddam Hussein, there would have been problems in that area. Max: What kind of problems? Dad: We all know that at one time Weapons of Mass Destruction were used against the Kurds in Iraq. In 1991, when we first went to Iraq, we found traces of Weapons of Mass Destruction. We also know that there was some genocide against the Iraqi people. We also know from history that their dictators only work for people on the far right. There is nothing democratic about dictatorships. Hence there can be no freedom of speech or any of the freedoms that we are privileged to enjoy in this country. Not that we should impose our will on other countries, but when you see a people struggling for an identity, I felt we needed to go and resolve that problem. Max: What do you think would have happened if we hadn’t gone? Dad: I believe that America’s interest in the region would have suffered far greater than it was today. Max: What do mean by “interest?” Dad: I mean foreign policy. Max: Why do you think we would have been worse off? Dad: I really don’t know how or what would have happened if we didn’t go; I can only imagine. But I imagine this: look at how unsettled the region is today even though there are more democratic views than there ever were. Imagine, dictators around the region with no regard for the best interest of their own people, and concerned only for their egos and the good of themselves and their families. That’s where the corruption is. |
